Krum's Tech Tip
IS YOUR 2000 SPORSTER LEAKING OIL?
If you have a model year 2000 or later SPORSTER you may be experencing a problem you can't get an answer for.
That problem is an oil leak or what appears to be an oil leak at or around the back of your oil tank under the seat. It could look like your oil tank is dripping oil at the back of your crankcases and onto the ground.
This situation is not the tank at all but the newly re-designed transmission vent. In 2000 Harley-Davidson changed the location of the vent fitting in the crankcase

2000 and Later Transmission Vent

1999 and early transmission Vent
As you can see the vent has been moved from the center rear of the trans area to a point above and behind the starter motor. The hose was then routed down under the battery box and up under the seat this routing is where the problem comes from, oil will collect in the low area of the hose and
1. Not permit the transmission the vent properly
2. Cause oil to push out of the hose under the seat.

The fix for this problem is simply to reroute the hose, this requires removal of the seat and battery. After the battery and seat are removed cut any zip ties on the vent hose and pull it free from under the battery box. Re-route the hose up behind the front battery box bracket, up and outside of the frame tube, take the hose up on top of the oil tank and to a point just in front of the rear fender. Add zip ties to hold the hose in place (make sure you don't pull the zip ties too tight so as to pinch off the hose) once this is done reassemble the battery and seat.
